On September 8, 2026, Seifullin University launched the Regional Workshop on Episystems and Validation of the Regional Strategy for the Eradication of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Central Asia.
The three-day event is being held at the Situation Center of the Seifullin University Agrotechnopark from September 8 to 10. It brings together international experts, representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), government agencies, veterinary services, and relevant organizations.
Azamat Berdibay, Head of the Cabinet of the Islamic Organization for Food Security, delivered welcoming remarks and emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among countries and international organizations in strengthening veterinary and food security.
The participants were also welcomed by Zhanyl Bozayeva, FAO Programme Coordinator in Kazakhstan, who highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and joint efforts to prevent the spread of PPR and advance its eradication.
On behalf of the host university, Sarsenbay Abdrakhmanov, Member of the Management Board – Vice-Rector for Research Activities, welcomed the participants. He noted that PPR goes far beyond a narrowly defined veterinary issue and poses a serious threat to the sustainable development of the livestock sector.
The workshop aims to support the practical application of the episystem approach and the technical validation of the Regional PPR Eradication Strategy for Central Asia. Particular attention is being paid to identifying interconnected episystems, strengthening surveillance and laboratory diagnostics, vaccination, data sharing, cross-border coordination, and joint planning.
Over the course of three days, international experts and representatives of FAO, IOFS, and government agencies will work at the Seifullin University Agrotechnopark. The programme includes country presentations, expert sessions, and working-group discussions. Participants will examine the regional PPR situation, livestock movements and the role of wildlife in disease transmission, as well as surveillance and diagnostic approaches.
A separate part of the programme will focus on the validation of the draft Regional PPR Strategy. Experts will discuss its roadmap, priority episystems, surveillance and laboratory diagnostics, vaccination, and mechanisms for cross-border coordination, while also identifying key components of a future regional project.
The final day will focus on moving from strategy to action. Participants will identify follow-up measures at the national and regional levels, discuss partnership opportunities, and consider mechanisms for further regional coordination.
The workshop at Seifullin University provides an important platform for strengthening international expert dialogue and developing coordinated solutions to enhance veterinary security, protect livestock production, and support the sustainable development of the agricultural sector in Central Asia.
