Opening and first day of the seminar “Modern European waste management system” within the framework of Erasmus +

Today, March 11, 2024, the 6th training seminar “Modern European forms and methods of waste management” started at KATRU. The seminar was organized within the framework of the EU Erasmus project “Development of the circular economy in partner countries through the development and implementation of the Master program in Waste Management” UnWaste.

“International cooperation is a strategic direction for the development of our university, and we intend to further strengthen international contacts with universities around the world, expanding the network of partners and participating in international projects,” said KATRU Rector, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kanat Tireuov.

The project coordinator is the Wismar University, the partners are universities from Latvia (ESA University, Riga), Estonia (Tallinn University of Technology) and three universities of Kazakhstan (Kostanay Regional University named after A. Baitursynov - country project coordinator, Kokshetau University named after Sh. Ualikhanov and Kazakh Agrotechnical Research University named after S. Seifullin).

The seminar was attended Gunnar Prause, Project Coordinator, Wismar University, Germany; colleagues from EKA University (Latvia): Vice-rector for science and international cooperation Prof. Elena Titko, assistant professor and Director of the Management study program Natalia Verina, guest professor Tatyana Tambovtseva, Assistant professor and head of the Development Department of the scientific institute Evgenia Dekhtyare, assistant professor Kaspars Steinbergs, Director of the training program “Circular Economy and Social Entrepreneurship” Edgars Cerkovskis; I.V. Koshkin, Country coordinator of the project (A.Baitursynov Kostanay Regional University), local coordinator G.B. Yunusova; as well as A.A. Kakabaev, Advisor to the Rector for International Project Management (Sh.Ualikhanov Kokshetau University) and local coordinator Z.Y. (Sh.Ualikhanov Kokshetau University).

The implementation of this project is aimed at developing a master's program in waste management in each of the partner countries. Educational programs are implemented and accredited at all universities of the consortium. The partner universities are working to analyze educational programs, test lectures and improve teaching methods in accordance with the project goal “Development of a joint interdisciplinary master's program in Waste Management to increase knowledge about the circular economy using the experience of European universities.”

“Starting from November 2022 KATRU has started the transformation process to turn the university into a world-class university using the international standard of project management. The main goal is to be among the top 500 universities in the world.

The university has officially been given the status of “research”.

Thanks to the systematic work of the team, the University has taken a worthy place in the largest rankings of world universities.

KATRU took 1200th place in the QS World University Ranking: 351st place in the QS Asian University Ranking and 19th place in the QS Central Asia University Ranking. In the QS World Sustainability Rankings, the university took 1051 place. This year, the educational institution took part in the QS STARS rating for the first time and received 4 stars in the QS British world rating.

For the first time in 2023, KATRU took part in the UI Green Metric ranking of world universities and took 934th place.

In the field of science, the university is implementing 112 research projects with a total funding amount of 4.6 billion tenge.

One of the most significant achievements is that the university won a mega-project worth 4 billion tenge “Development of new technologies for organic production and processing of agricultural products” in the competition for program-targeted funding for 2023–2025. The goal of the program is the development of new technologies for organic production and processing of agricultural products, based on the principles of the “green economy” and the formation of regional technology parks and engineering centers in the agro-industrial complex.

In 2023, within the framework of grant funding for young scientists “Zhas Galym” for 2023–2025, 2 projects of our young scientists were approved for financing for a total amount of 47 million tenge.

In 2023, within the framework of the “500 Scientists” project of the Center for International Programs “Bolashak”, 37 representatives of the teaching staff of KATRU became the owner of grants for scientific internship.

In 2023, 3 KATRU teachers received state scientific scholarships, and one teacher became the winner of the annual republican competition “Best Researcher”.

At the end of the year, 7 university teachers became holders of the title “Best University Teacher 2023”.

In the area of commercialization of research results, 6 scientific projects are being implemented into production for a total amount of 2.9 billion tenge,” said Chairman of the Board-Rector Kanat Tireuov.

The seminar participants examined with interest the scientific laboratories and centers of KATRU.

At the end of his speech, Kanat Maratovich expressed hope that cooperation between universities will continue on a mutually beneficial basis and wished success to the seminar. The seminar will last until March 15.
