To further the Bologna Process by developing Information Literacy (IL) programs for use in curricula in HE. To create curriculum-integrated IL programs (embedded in the three cycle system bachelor/master/doctorate), to support quality assurance and recognition of qualifications for the development of lifelong learning in higher education and in society at large.

National awareness day of information literacy in Kazakhstan (Nur-Sultan, october 3, 2020)

On October 1-5, 2020, events dedicated to the Annual National Awareness Day of Information Literacy were held at Saken Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical University within the Erasmus+ DIREKT Project.

The official date of the National Awareness Day of Information Literacy is October 3, but due to the 3rd of October was day off, the project working group drafted out the program from October 1, 2 and 5.

All pre-organizational issues were discussed at the meeting of the KATU team.

The following activities were conducted:

1. Virtual book exhibition “ACADEMIC WRITING” was published on library social media profiles on October 3.

 

 

 

 

2. Webinar:

«BASIC SKILLS ON RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT» with KATU doctoral students conducted on October 2. Number of participants – 78 people.

 

 

 

3. A Webinar «HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARIZING ON SOCIAL MEDIA? » with KATU bachelor students held on October 2. Number of participants 323 students.

National awareness day of information literacy in Kazakhstan (Nur-Sultan, october 1-3, 2019)

On October 1-3, 2019, the National Awareness Day of Information Literacy was held in Saken Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical University within the Erasmus+ DIREKT Project. The objective of the National Awareness Day is to promote Information Literacy for Lifelong Learning in education and society involving the participation of primary, secondary, and higher educational institutions on an agreed day.

The official date of the National Awareness Day of Information Literacy October 3, but due to the large number of events dedicated to this day, the project working group drafted out the program from October 1 to 3.

All pre-organizational issues were discussed at the meeting of the KATU team.

In accordance with Marketing Strategy Plan of NAD 2019 following activities were conducted:

All events were carried out according to the program.

1. ESSAY COMPETITION: “Fake News and How to spot it?”

The teachers of Foreign Languages Department conducted essay competition among bachelor and master students. The result was announced on October 3. Number of participants are 160 students.

2. INFORMATION EXHIBITION: “Reading, Research and Writing”

The exhibition was available in the library during all three days of NAD IL.

The books on Academic Writing, periodicals in the field of Information Literacy, brochures and flyers were presented. More than 1000 people attended the exhibition.

3. DEBATE

On October 1 the teachers of Foreign Languages Department conducted Debate on “Understanding of Information Literacy” among master students.

Number of students - 30

4. WORKSHOP: “How to develop a scientific career with Scopus and Scival” – on work with scientometric databases for teachers and researchers was conducted. Participants had the possibility to test and improve their skills on work with Scopus and Scival resources in practice. Master class trainer was a consultant on key information solutions “Elsevier Science and Technology”, external partner of the university Andrey Loktev. The number of participants – 53 people.

5. QUIZ GAMES based on questions in the field of IL – with 1st-year students of humanitarian, economic, technical and agronomic faculties was conducted. There were 25 minutes for each group of participants (15-25 people). During the quiz games, students could demonstrate their knowledge about information literacy and the library. The winners were awarded tokens allowing to participate in the lottery within the “Library Open Air”.

Total number of participants – 121 students.

6. READING EVENING in the library – dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the great Kazakh poet Abay Kunanbayev and the 125th anniversary of the great writer Saken Seifullin was held. “Soil Science and Agrochemistry” department's 2nd-year students, "Standardization, Certification and Metrology” and “Veterinary Sanitation” departments' 1st-year students, as well as teachers of the Department of Kazakh and Russian Languages of the Faculty of Humanities took part.

Number of participants – 140 people.

7. SEMINAR: “Information literacy: identify, evaluate and effectively use" – for the young researchers' community was held. During the seminar, audiences improved their knowledge on how to search for information, identify and evaluate the sources of information, use the information effectively in their investigation, form the bibliographic description and avoid plagiarism. Total number of participants – 44 people.

8. ROUND TABLE (Coffee lecture): “Library engagement with researchers: from Interest to Understanding and Support” – with librarians of KATU and other HEIs libraries in Nur-Sultan was conducted.

During the roundtable following issues were discussed:

  • Library Services for the formation and development information literacy of researchers;
  • Engagement with university scientific community;
  • The current trend of social activity of the library: partnership and volunteering.

9. LIBRARY OPEN AIR

On October 3 KATU librarians organized the event “Library Open Air”. The fun games, as well as the lottery with tokens collected from other NAD IL activities, were held, where flash drives, notebooks, pens, pencil cases, mice for PCs, headphones, movie theatre tickets, gift certificates to a coffee shop and chocolate bars raffled off. Total number of participants – 115 people.

It can be noted that upon completion of this event, all the guests, students and staff of S. Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical University were informed about the project, information literacy, new features and services of modern libraries.

The first coordination meeting of KATU EC ERASMUS + project DIREKT 574157

From March 6 to March 9, 2017,  at Petrozavodsk State University (PetrSU) hosted the first  working  meeting  on  the  project  “Developing  Trans-regional  information  literacy  for lifelong learning and the knowledge economy (DIREKT)”,  implemented in the framework of the Erasmus + program of the European Union. The meeting was of an organizational character.

That event was attended by all participants from partner countries: Technical University of  Dresden,  Konstantin  Philosopher  University  in  Nitra  (Slovakia),  as  well  as  NKOwith competence in the field of information literacy, for example, The Pyramid Group (Germany) and the  non-profit  partnership  NEICON  (Moscow),  Beijing  Institute  of  Technology,  Northwest Polytechnic University and Nanjing University of Science and Technology. On the Russian side, the participants are Petrozavodsk State University, Ogarev National Research Mordovian State University, E. Kant Baltic Federal University, and Far Eastern Federal University. Kazakhstan is represented  by  participants:  S.Seifullin  Kazakh  Agrotechnical  University,  A.  BaytursynovKostanay State University, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

During the meeting, the participants had the opportunity to present their universities, the role  of  each  partner  university  in  the  project,  got  acquainted  with  Jerald  Cavanagh,  project manager,  and  Padraig  Kirby,  project  coordinator  from  the  Limerick  Institute  of  Technology (Ireland),  the  grant-holder  university  (Limerick,  Ireland),  who  explained  the  purpose  andobjectives of the project, detailed the mission and strategy of the project, outlined the expected results in the project, and identified the country coordinators from each partner country.

It  was  decided  to  continue  the  meeting  on  March  8-9  by  the  session  of  country coordinators from each participant country for a detailed discussion of the identified issues and tasks, determining the terms and responsible persons for the implementation of specific stages of the project, discussing important points in the project and others.

Thus, following the results of the session and the meeting, the project participants came to a mutual decision to provide the following information within 2 weeks after the meeting:

  1. List of all participants of the project (full name, position in the university, level of knowledge of the English language, contact information) for the duration of the project.
  2. List of  the  Project  Management  Committee.  Two  people  from  each  EU  /  PC  to  form  the Project Management Committee for Academic and Financial Affairs.
  3. List of responsible people for social  networks within the DIREKT project  from each EU / PC university.

In addition, the participants presented their sample logos and a completed questionnaire with the data of each partner institution that was sent to Limerick for a final decision.

As a result of the meeting, was agreed a plan of further actions for the implementation of the project,  were developed  recommendations for its further promotion.In the framework of theproject, participants  from different universities of the world will have to create curriculum and training  modules,aimed  at  the  formation  of  students  and  teachers  of  information  literacy,  the formation of skills and academic writing. In addition, these modules will help learners how to

learn the correct search, processing, dissemination and preservation of information, thus prepare them  for  the  information  and  communication  challenges  of  the  modern  world  of  digital technology, the accompanying person in a professional and personal life.

The  scientific  libraries  of  universities  will  be  the  sites  for  the  realization  of  the developments.  They  have  a  rich  experience  in  the  field  of  accumulation,  preservation  and transfer of knowledge, which will be implemented taking into account new technologies and will serve the realization of the ideology of lifelong education.

The next meeting of the working group will be held in May in Beijing.

The second coordination meeting of EC ERASMUS+

In the frame work of the international project “Developing Trans-regional information literacy for lifelong learning and the know ledge economy (DIREKT)”, Beijing Institute of Technology hosted the second working group meeting of partner universities from Kazakhstan, Russia, and China with themajor project coordinators from the Limerick Institute of Technology (Ireland) from 6 to 14 May, 2017.

In order to fulfill the tasks of the above-mentioned project, an appropriate meeting program was developed, according to which the work and training of participants was conducted.

Following the results of the first coordination meeting, it was decided to create training modules for each partner university, through which will be guideto learn the correct search, processing, dissemination and preservation of information.

During the Didactic and Scientific Working Group (DSWG) Meeting, 11 organizations involved in the project described theirproject activities. The coordinator of each organization presented the following topics:

  1. Present the partner, the role within the project and potential contribution
  2. Speak about the needs related to the project
  3. Present the team that will be involved in the Didactic & Scientific Working Group (DSWG) of the project and specify the roles of the team members in the DSWG and DSWG activities

Moreover, the participants and the project leaders discussed in detail and developed the action algorithmof ESP, information literacy and academic writing for the library staff, teaching staff and students on the didactic and scientific working group meeting of the project.

In addition, as a result of the seminar, the deadlines for the delivery of a curriculum for the training of librarians in ESP were determined, it is necessary to identify the percentage of librarians and university researchers who speak English as well.

According to the plan, the next meeting of the working group will be held in October, 2017 at the Institute of Technology Limerick (Ireland).

Academic mobility of employees Within the eu international program ERASMUS+

Librarians of S.Seifullin KATU Science library Maginur Tulekina and Zhuldyz Orazymbetova together with teachers Saule Rustemova and Aliya Koksegen undertook an academic mobility internship at Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT), Republic of Ireland to improve library and information skills in the framework of the international project Erasmus+ "The development of trans-regional information literacy for lifelong education and the economy of knowledge DIREKT", the purpose of which is to develop information literacy and library services in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China.

LIT is one of the 13 institutes included in the list of technology institutes of Ireland, and the LIT library leads a large project funded by ERASMUS+. Irish colleagues, who spoke about their university and the structure of the university library, conducted tours, trainings and seminars.

DIREKT Curriculum Training in Limerick 08-18 October, 2017

There was the Curriculum Training within the framework of the international project ERASMUS+ «DIREKT: Developing Trans-regional information literacy for lifelong learning and the knowledge economy» at Limerick Institute of Technology from 8 to 18 October. The meeting was devoted to the review of modules of information literacy and academic writing and creating a strategy of marketing plan of actions of national day of awareness on information literacy.

For the purpose of developing study program on information literacy and academic writing Padraig Kirby, coordinator of the project conducted trainings clarifying each chapter of all modules. AlsoDr. Katerina Veselá from Constantine the Philosopher University (Nitra, Slovakia) shared her own experience on academic writing and told about the main principles of written English.

Gerald Cullen from TechnischeUniversitat Dresden and Paul Francis East representing The Pyramid Group trained the project team for marketing skills to create plan of actions of national day of awareness on information literacy. As a result of this training the project team from three countries developed plan of actions of national day of awareness on information literacy.  

Also the participants from Kazakhstan, Russia, and China introduced with Limerick Institute of Technology Library within the workshop.

Following the results of the third meeting the project team defined deadline of study program and planned “pilot” introduction of discipline on information literacy and academic writing into the educational process of the university.

Working groups meeting on the EU project ERASMUS+ «DIREKT»

From 22 to 25 May, 2018 on the basis of theHerzen State Pedagogical Universityof Russia the working groups meeting in the framework of the international project ERASMUS+ «DIREKT: The development of trans-regional information literacy for lifelong education and the economy of knowledge» was held. The meeting was devoted to a review of module piloting and planning the development of an online platform for information literacy modules and academic writing.

The meeting was attended by representatives of all the partner universities of the consortium, as well as the project coordinator, Padreig Kirby, project participants Yana Lupricheva (Konstantin Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovakia) and Valeryia Racheyeva (Pyramid Group, Germany).

According to the program of the meeting, the project participants worked in two groups: 1) a working group on information literacy modules and academic writing, which included KATU teams – Nuralina M.T. and Zhumadillayeva O.A.; 2) the working group on training modules, the group members – Akhmetova M.D. and Orazymbetova Zh.A.

The working group on information literacy modules discussed the following points:

  • Coordination of guidelines in the development of an online library module;
  • The development of online library module;
  • The purchase of equipment, including software in the project;
  • Completion of project guidelines and plans;
  • National Information Literacy Awareness Days;
  • Quality management and evaluation of the working group and other operational issues.

During the meeting of the first group, the project coordinator Padreig Kirby demonstrated the online module of the previous projectas an example, on which additional proposals were made by the project participants. Yana Lupricheva (Slovakia) shared her experience in developing online modules and gave useful advice to the participants of the meeting. The expected results from the developed online module on information literacy and academic writing were discussed in detail. Also, Russian partners shared their experience in holding a national day of awareness of information literacy.

In the working group on training modules, each partner university presented a report on the implementation and dissemination of information about the project and piloting the project modules. Valeria Racheyeva (Germany) discussed with the project participants the importance of quality management and project performance assessment, as a key indicator of the dissemination of information about the project. She spoke in detail about the work of the official site of the project and noted that it is necessary to make reports on the site on the dissemination of information about the project implementation at partner universities.

As a result of this meeting, a plan for further actions on the project implementation was agreed.

The next meeting will be held in July 2018 at the University of Technology in Dresden (Germany).

National awareness day of information literacy in kazakhstan (Astana, October 1-4, 2018)

On October 1-4, 2017, the National Awareness Day of Information Literacy was held in Saken Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical University within the Erasmus+ DIREKT Project. The objective of the National Awareness Day is to promote Information Literacy for Lifelong Learning in education and society involving the participation of primary, secondary, and higher educational institutions on an agreed day.

The date and the plan of activities of the National Awareness Day of Information Literacy were agreed upon earlier by the project partners of Kazakhstan. October 3, 2018 was defined as the National Awareness Day of IL, but due to the large number of events dedicated to this day, the project working group drafted out the programfrom October 1 to 4.

Several meetings of the KATU project participants were held on pre-organizational issues like, inviting speakers to speak at a seminar, preparing content and design of printed publications with the project logo (flyers, booklets, bookmarks for books in three languages), gifts for participants in events and competitions (flash drives, t-shirts, notebooks, pens, magnets, key chains with the project logo).

All activities were carried out strictly according to the regulation of the program.

The first event, timed to coincide with the National Awareness Day of Information Literacy in Kazakhstan, began on September 20. That day, an essay contest on the topic “Information Literacy in the 21st Century” was announced. About 60 participants participated in this competition (senior bachelor, master students). According to the rules of the competition, participants had to submit their work before September 30 and the results of the competition were announced on October 3 at the end of the seminar. After checking all the essays, 3 winners were identified and awarded certificates and gifts.

From October 1 to October 4, an exhibition of books and periodicals on the topic “Information Literacy and Academic Writing” was opened in the research library of KATU. Aswell on October 1-2, a series of trainings on such topics as: “Information literacy: concept, purpose, its key elements”, “Methods of searching information on the Internet. Google and Academic Databases”,“Review of open access resources”,“ Impact factor and other indicators for scientists ”, etc. were conducted for students, postgraduates, doctoral students, teachers and librarians.

On October 2, the research library and the Faculty of Computer Systems and Vocational Educationorganized an event called “Night at the Library”, where students gave presentations on the following topics: “A tour of 10 libraries in Astana”, “Perspectives of public libraries in the 21stcentury”, etc., after presentations, students took part in discussions and quizzes.

On October 3, the city hosted a seminar on “Information Literacy and Academic Writing in Science and Higher Education”, to which international experts were invited as speakers: Fatih Thomson, TESOL lecturer, University of Washington, USA and Benjamin Taylor, EFL lecturer, Georgetown University, USA, also specialists from the Nazarbayev University Library: Peotr Lapo, Principal Library Expert and Yelizaveta Kamilova, Expert Manager, Library Reference Department. The seminar was attended by over 200 people, among whom there were librarians of higher educational institutions of Astana and teachers, doctoral students, postgraduates, students of KATU. Also, after the seminar, the Library Open Air was held at the university, where prizes were awarded based on the results of a competition in a social network, which was announced earlier on the library page on Facebook.

On October 4, an on-site training was organized for the Faculty of Veterinary and Livestock Technology, which is located in a separate building of the university.

It can be noted that upon completion of this event, all the guests, students and staff of S.Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical University were informed aboutthe project, information literacy, new features and services of modern libraries.

Meeting on the EU project ERASMUS+ «DIREKT»

From 22 to 25 October 2018 on the basis of the Kazakh National Al-Farabi University hosted a working meeting in the framework of the international project ERASMUS + "DIREKT: The development of trans-regional information literacy for lifelong education and knowledge economy".

The members of the didactic and scientific group and the working group on information literacy modules participated the meeting. During the work of the groups, technical issues of developing an online platform for information literacy modules and academic writing have been discussed in detail. The project coordinators also presented the content of 8 modules on academic writing, which was added to the list of modules based on the results of the coordination meeting in Dresden (July, Germany).

The meeting was attended by the representatives of all the partner universities of the consortium, a project leader Gerald Kavana, a project coordinator Padraig Kirby, project participants Eva Reid (Konstantin Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovakia), Gerard Cullen (Dresden Technical University, Germany) and ValeriyaRacheyeva ( Pyramid Group, Germany).

  During the first group meeting, the project coordinator Padraig Kirby conducted a training session on academic writing: reliable sources of information, scientific data, ethical use of information, avoidance of plagiarism, etc.

Particular attention was paid to the results of the information literacy day at the partner-universities of all three countries. The meeting participants shared their experience and presented their reports in the form of presentation. At the end of the discussion of the reports, the participants-partners discussed information literacy awareness plans for 2019.

Also, a country coordinator of the Russian Federation Olga Sofonkina spoke on the monitoring of the project, which was held on September 7, 2018 in Petrozavodsk State University. Based on the monitoring results, the following recommendations were made:

  • in the content of theguideline on planning of the information literacy education, to identify a specific target group;
  • to improve the structure of theguideline on planning of theinformation literacy education;
  • to consider the issue of translating the guideline into the official languages ​​of the partner countries.

As a result of this meeting, a plan for further actions on the project implementation was agreed.

The next working meeting will be held in December 2018 at the North-West Polytechnic University (PRC).

Working meeting on the eu project ERASMUS+ «DIREKT»

In the period from December 16 to December 20, 2018, at the Northwestern Polytechnic University of Xi'an (PRC) a meeting of the working group on information literacy and academic writing (ILTWG) in the framework of the European Union Erasmus+ project “DIREKT: The development of trans-regional information literacy for lifelong education and knowledge economy" was held.The members of the Project Evaluation Working Group Angela Repanovici (University of Transylvania in Brasov, Romania), ManolisKoukourakis (University of Crete, Greece) and Ratko Knezevich (University of Bihac, Bosnia and Herzegovina) participated in the meeting.

The meeting was attended by the director of the department of international cooperation development and multilingual educationof S. Seifullin KATU Saltanat Meiramova and a librarian Zhuldyz Orazymbetova.

The meeting was devoted to a review of the activities and results of the project, as well as training on module 7 of the DIREKT project. The project coordinators (LIT) gave presentations on the structure and mechanisms of the project, the project quality management plan and strategies for disseminating the results, as well as module 7 content: academic writing and information literacy, academic writing ethics, plagiarism and bibliographic description.

On the third day of the meeting, the participants of the partner countries presented reports on the project implementation andexecuted work.
