The Department of Thermal Power Plants was established in 2002 on the basis of the Department of Electrical Equipment Operation. In 2008, due to the change in the classifier of specialties of the Republic of Kazakhstan, it was renamed to the Department of Heat Power Engineering.
The department is a graduate of the group of educational programs 062 - "Electrical Engineering and Power Engineering", the direction of "Heat Power Engineering". The staff of the department is 19 people (doctors of technical sciences - 5, doctors of PhD - 1, candidates of sciences - 5, masters - 8), degree of degree - 58%.
Preparation is carried out on the basis of a state order and a paid-contractual basis, according to a three-level form of study: bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies. The department provides the opportunity to study in multilingual groups, where training is carried out in three languages: Kazakh, Russian and English.
Undergraduate courses taught in English: Information and Communication Technologies, Cultural Studies and Psychology, philosophy, Fundamentals of Economics and Law, Mathematics 1 and 2, fluid mechanics, Boiler Plants and Steam generators, heat Networks and heat supply systems.
Subjects of the Master's degree program taught in English: history and philosophy of science, methods of maximum energy saving, scientific and technical problems of heat power engineering and heat engineering, cycles and installations of heat engineering processes.

The department has an extensive database of practices, which includes specialized enterprises in the field of heat and power engineering throughout the Republic of Kazakhstan. With the main base enterprises in Nur-Sultan: JSC "Astana Energy" and JSC "Astana – Teplotransit", on the basis of signed contracts, a dual training system is implemented.
The department is headed by Dr. PhD Mergalimova Almagul Kairbergenovna.

The scientific direction of the department has a general orientation and is determined by the solution of the following issues: improving the efficiency of using the potential of the fuel and energy sector, rationalizing energy equipment, using man-made waste from heat and power production and renewable energy.
According to the results of scientific and technical activities over the past three years, more than 200 scientific papers have been published, including 12 articles in international scientific journals included in the Scopus and Thomson Reuters databases with a quartile of at least Q1-Q3, 5 patents for inventions have been obtained, 8 textbooks have been published, including 2 recommended by the ROMS of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Department "Thermal power plants" was created in 2002, on the basis of the Department "Exploitation of electrical equipment."
The first head of the department was the doctor of technical sciences, professor Ganzhara Vladimir Ivanovich (2002 -. 2005), who invested a lot of effort and energy into its logistics and personnel formation.

From 2013-2014 academic year is carried out in a set of Master's degree in 6M071700 - «Heat power engineering».
Students of the specialty "Heat power engineering" together with the teachers take an active part in all events held at the faculty and the university (public holidays, sporting events, month on crime prevention, drug addiction and religious extremism).
For students organized a meeting with the heads and specialists of relevant organizations with an invitation to give lectures and excursions. Students of the department are to debate club "Elite", and sports clubs organized by the university.
As part of the socio-political, patriotic and legal education held curatorial hours devoted to the Kazakhstan national holidays, the conversation on the topic of discussion of the Annual message of the President, Strategy "Kazakhstan-2050".
Youth actively participates in conferences and round tables held by the Committee of Technical Regulation and Metrology of the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
