Since 2010, S.Seifullin Kazakh Agro Technical University was one of the first in Kazakhstan to train specialists in the field of "Plant protection and quarantine". In 2013, the Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy. Since May 2022, the department has been called the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine.
The main activities of the department are teaching disciplines and training future specialists in the field of biology, plant protection and quarantine. The department is producing in the field of education of 6B08 – "Agriculture and bioresources" and the areas of training of the specialty are B077-"Phytosanitary safety", B050-Biology, M131 – "Phytosanitary monitoring", D131 – "Phytosanitary technologies".
According to the staff schedule, the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine consists of 26 teachers, including 2 Doctors of Sciences, 6 Doctors of Philosophy (PhD), 8 candidates of Sciences and 7 Masters of Sciences. From the auxiliary staff, 1 senior laboratory assistant and 2 laboratory assistants work at the department.
The basis of educational programs in the field of plant protection and quarantine are courses: general and agricultural entomology; general and agricultural phytopathology; harmful nematodes, mites, rodents; chemical and biological plant protection; phytosanitary monitoring and prediction of the development and spread of harmful organisms; plant quarantine; plant immunity, etc. Multilingual training is conducted in the direction of preparation of the master's degree M131 – "Phytosanitary monitoring" and PhD's degree D131 – "Phytosanitary technologies".
The Department of teaching and teaching staff annually produces educational and methodological literature. In the quality of newly developed textbooks "phytosanitary technologies of cultivation of agricultural crops", "Technology of processing and storage of crop production", "Innovative technologies in teaching of disciplines on specialty "Plant protection and quarantine", "Protecting crops in decorative cultivation", "Chemical plant protection", "Biological agents of plant protection", "Innovative technologies for detecting common parasites of fish, amphibians and reptiles" and others.
The organization of the educational process includes methodological seminars, open lectures, master classes and round tables. So, the teachers of the department conducted methodological seminars on the topics "Organization and conduct of professional practice", "Research work with students at the bachelor's and master's degree stages", "Innovative diagnostic methods in biology", master classes "Preparative forms of pesticides and methods of their application", open video lectures "Diagnosis of virus diseases of potato plants by immunochromatographic test", "Ecology of harmful organisms".
For educational and scientific purposes, 5 laboratories are used (plant biotechnology, phytosanitary optimization, phytopathology, entomology and a specialized agrochemical laboratory), one phytotron and 2 research centers (scientific and innovative center for phytosanitary monitoring, plant protection and quarantine, scientific and educational innovation center for agrobiological research).
The herbarium fund, which includes collections of plants from different ecosystems of different regions of the Republic, has been created and is being unified according to international standards at the department.
The scientific research carried out by the department is included in the Republican programs on priority areas of development of agricultural science and has both theoretical and practical significance. The teaching staff of the department actively conducts research, involving young scientists. A new direction of studying the phytosanitary condition of ornamental and flower crops and ornamental crops in general has been started and is being intensively developed at the department. In this regard, a collection fund of living plants was founded for scientific research and as a methodological support. This direction is supported by scientific ties with the Botanical Garden of Nur-Sultan, JSC "Zelenstroy" and other economic entities.
The staff of the department has published more than 20 scientific articles in the journals of the Scopus and WebofScience database in recent years, more than 50 articles in the journals of the list of the Committee for Control in the Field of Education and Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, received 9 innovative patents.
List of recent publications of the faculty of the department included in the Scopus and Web of Science databases
The research department uses domestic and foreign research infrastructure. Joint research and scientific expeditions are conducted with scientists of Kazakhstan, primarily with the Kazakh Research Institute for Plant Protection and Quarantine. There is close cooperation with relevant organizations within the country. According to the concluded agreements, students undergo production and research practices on the basis of the Kazakh Research Institute of Grain Farming named after A.I. Barayev, the Zh. Zhyembayev Kazakh Research Institute of Plant Protection and Quarantine, Kazakh Research Institute of Agriculture and Plant Growing, branches of the Republican Methodological Center for Phytosanitary Diagnostics and Forecasts of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, RSE "Phytosanitary", GU "Republican Plant Quarantine Center" and other agricultural enterprises. The heads of the practices are teachers of the department and, along with this, specialists from enterprises and institutions, thereby expanding the introduction of dual education. Students of the 2nd-4th year are interning on the campus of S.Seifullin Kazakh Agro Technical University.
Graduates of the specialties in their professional activities will be able to realize themselves in the public service in the field of plant protection and quarantine; scientific and production structures of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan; all types of agricultural formations of plant profile; centers for phytosanitary diagnostics and forecasts; plant quarantine centers; biomethod laboratories, biofactories and biolaboratories of a wide profile; border quarantine posts; various commercial firms.

In the history of the University, from 1963 to 1973 there was a Department “Plant protection“ ( the head is Roktanen L. P.), which later was transformed into the Department “Horticulture and plant protection“ (the head is Shepetkov N. G.). Specialists who made a great contribution to plant protection in the Department were professionals Kostromitin V., A. I. Calis, E. D. Smetanina, L. P. Roktanen, L. P. Novikova, M. F.
Plant protection disciplines were taught for various agronomic specialties, including in recent years in the composition of departments: agro-ecology and agricultural chemistry; crop production. In 2010, the Department "Plant" produced the first set of students majoring in 5B081100- "Plant protection and quarantine". In January 2013 the Department "Crop production, agriculture and plant protection" was reorganized into 2 departments - "Farming and crop production"(acting head isStybaev G. Zh.) and "Plant protection and quarantine" (acting head is A.K. Tuleeva).
Currently the plant protection and quarantinein Kazakhstan is considered as the most important sector, providing food and phytosanitary security of the country. Modern plant protection is one of the fastest growing areas in agriculture. In the conditions of hardening of requirements of ecology of the open global market, it is necessary that the phytosanitary service was correctly decided the issues of preservation of yield and quality against pests, diseases and weeds, were guided in a broad range of pesticides.
S. Seifullin Kazakh agrotechnical University is one of the first in the country began preparation of specialists in "Plant protection and quarantine".
In 2013, for the first time in the history of the university in the Central and Northern region of the country, the Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine was opened, which included highly qualified teachers. In the same year, a magistracy was opened in the specialty 6M081100 - "Plant Protection and Quarantine" and the first set of undergraduates was made. From the 2014-2015 academic year, master's studies are conducted in multilingual groups.
In August 2015, the license for the preparation PhD doctors in 6D081100- "Plant protection and quarantine"was received. In 2015 the Department on all three levels of higher education successfully passed the state certification for a period of 5 years. Since May 2022, after joining the Department of Biological Sciences, the department has been called "Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine".
